Our world has got a lot of wonderful things and amazing structures constructed all over the world. But beauty doesn’t work when the earth is so much prone to numerous calamities. There are engineers who have kept this very important thing in their mind while constructing the buildings. The results of their wit are one of the toughest structures in the world. Few of them are listed below:
The Doomsday Seed Vault
The Doomsday Seed Vault is the structure that was built keeping in mind a “global disaster”. It is situated on the small Norwegian island of Spitsbergen. It is an underground bunker that was completed and opened in 2008. The naturally cold condition of Spitsbergen is the reason why all of the genetic codes for the essential crops are stored here. It is so strong that it can withstand nuclear strikes, and it has already survived a 6.2 scale earthquake.
Once classified as the tallest in the world, Taipei 101 is situated in Xinyi District, Taipei, Taiwan. In 2011, its energy and environmental friendly design led it to be declared as the tallest and largest green building in the world. The tower is designed to withstand typhoons and earthquakes.
The building situated at Shanghai, which is a home to extremely strong winds making it prone to hurricanes and flooding, is built with a twisting design that reduces the impact of strong winds by 24 percent, keeping the building upright. The unique part of Shanghai tower is that it is built with 25 percent less steel than skyscrapers of a similar size.
CCTV building in Beijing has a controversial design. Its cantilevered design puts huge gravitational pressure on it whereas the external diagrid “exoskeleton” redistributes these loads across the surface of the building to keep it upright even in earthquakes of up to 8 magnitudes.
Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital
Situated very close to Boston Navy Yard, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital is very prone to heavy flooding. It has a raised level of space built from granite berms situated outside the building that can deflect flooding. It is being built in such a way that flooding of lower floors won’t affect the upper floors.
Public Safety Building
The Public Safety Building at Salt Lake City, Utah is certified to withstand not just a single, but multiple seismic abuses. It houses both police and fire departments, along with an emergency response centre that remains functional even after a disastrous earthquake of around 7.5 magnitudes.
Torre Mayor situated in the city of Mexico, which has a hand-in-hand relationship with earthquakes, is one of the most earthquake-proof structures on the planet, as it can withstand a quake of 8.5 on the Richter scale.
These are the toughest structures or the engineering marvels of the world. They can not only withstand just the test of time but also the most deadly catastrophes that can come their way. Further enhancements in the construction industry will help us realize even sturdier structures that will pass the test of time for centuries to come.
